Earrings with natural Mother of Pearl in the shape of Rose. Silver plate.
Mother of Pearl, which is also known as nacre, is an iridescent layer of material that makes up the lining of many mollusks. Mother of pearl has been used for thousands of years, and was even found in the tombs of Sumerian royalty. The name “mother of pearl” actually came from the Latin term ‘mater perlarun’. This material was so prized that many seaside cultures became incredibly wealthy through harvesting it during ancient times.
